Abstract

The experience of being baptized in the Holy Spirit, with the gift of
speaking in tongues as its early evidence, has become a characteristic of
the classical Pentecostal movement initiated by Parham in Topeka, Kansas, more than a century ago. However, today many churches that call themselves Pentecostal are too extreme in emphasizing the use of speaking in tongues. Meanwhile, in the Bible, St. Paul gives an important direction especially for the church in Corinth to see and understand that the gift of speaking in tongues is not a sign for believers but for unbelievers. How can this text be understood correctly? The author will conduct an exegetical study to find the true meaning that St. Paul wanted to convey to the church in Corinth.
