The Role of the Shepherd in Addressing the Moral Crisis of the Younger Generation

A Perspective Based on Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Abstract

The moral crisis facing the young Christian generation in the digital era presents a serious challenge that demands a profound and structured theological response from the church. This article aims to examine the role of the pastor in addressing this moral crisis, drawing on the thought of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and integrating it with contemporary research findings. Employing a descriptive qualitative research method based on a literature review, the article analyzes primary sources of Bonhoeffer’s theology—as cited in scholarly journals—alongside relevant academic literature. The study reveals five interconnected roles for the pastor: transformational mentor, personal companion, teacher grounded in the Word, living example, and builder of a faith community. Bonhoeffer emphasizes that true moral formation is not merely a matter of teaching religious rules but involves an inner transformation born of a living relationship with Christ through genuine discipleship. A gap identified in previous research is the lack of integration between Bonhoeffer’s pastoral theology and the specific context of the digital-age moral crisis facing young people. This article contributes by offering a holistic pastoral framework rooted in Bonhoeffer’s theology as a response to the moral crisis of the younger generation.
